As we may already know, it had been just 8 years since the condemnation of Galileo. Descartes’ intention of doing this is obvious. The Meditations on First Philosophy or, simply, the Meditations, is prefaced by a letter to the wisest and most distinguished men, the dean and doctors of the Faculty of Theology of the then University of Paris. Though it is usually known as the Meditations, the full title of the work is Meditations on First Philosophy in which the Existence of God and the Distinction of the Soul from the Body are Demonstrated. The Meditations on First Philosophy is Descartes’ most famous work.
